Little Catch Up

I probably will not have any readers for this blog post, or the next upcoming ones. I truly plan on continuing blogger. Starting this blog in 7th grade for class assignments truly made an impact on my writing style. Of course, Mrs. Larson, my teacher, was there to guide me and did so much more. Huge thank you for that. I want to enhance my writing and what better way to do that than practicing. I still have my mind set on becoming a journalist, therefore, this might be a good idea.

When I graduated middle school I still kept in contact with my friends, for a while. We did lose contact eventually. We did not completely lose contact until I started summer school at Fenwick high school. One friend, she is an Irish dancer. I'm assuming from what I have seen on social media she is traveling the country performing her dancing. Another friend, went to Seattle as a camp trip. The rest, I'm not sure what they did but they probably were also busy. I, on the other hand, was also busy. Still am, actually. I had summer school and had many adventures that I would like to write about on another post.

Throughout this whole entire summer I was doing something constantly. I was planning for my quinceañera. The traditional hispanic royal ball a young lady has when she turns 15. My family and I started the planning last year, but we still have a lot of last minute things to do. My quince will be held exactly on my birthday which I am excited about. One would think that planning this party is fun, and it is somewhat true. It can also be very stressful. What I am overall hopeful for is that my guests have a fun time and will forever remember my party.

My summer has not only been filled with quince planning, but of course reading. Reading is just a constant hobby I will always do. The books I have read this summer is The Hobbit, a very famous read. I read this book with my dad since he took a small summer break from school. It was a good experience being able to have a discussion on a book with him. When I usually share facts about a book I am interested in to my parents, they get annoyed so they tell me to go do something. After The Hobbit, I read Papertowns by John Green. Just like any John Green book one can expect an unexpected surprised. No more will be said for spoiling purposes. Then there are two summer books that were assigned to me for school. I finished When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka. I had a hard time starting this book because historical fiction is not my favorite genre. Right now I am starting Haroun and The Sea of Stories by Salman Otsuka. This book is starting off to be interestingly confusing. I've had other summer reads but I rather save those for separate blog posts.

What I plan to do with this blog is branch out and write about anything. It'll just be a random blog with random topics. I hope to gain readers through Instagram, because that is where I would advertise my blog. Most people who follow me on there are bookworms, fangirls and fanboys. I know they would want reviews on books and I am more than happy to do it. :) Welcome to my blog! 👑

Final Reflection

This year went by faster than I anticipated, but when other years are added in I say to myself, "Finally." Despite the fact that most people say "High School are the real years," I will miss Middle School. I will be honest, I won't miss my classes or students, but I will miss Mrs. Larson's Accelerated English Language Arts class. We were a group of students who are motivated to do well and have a future. Even though there may be some students who claim to just be "winging it," they are not. They truly care. Being part of this class made me feel part of a special group. Throughout the years in this class, an abundance of things has changed. We have become young adults and let me reflect on what made this transformation.

One of the three most important things I learned this year is how to become a better writer. I used to be blinded by how I wrote. My sentences had more than one thought or maybe no complete thoughts at all. My sentences would be run-ons because of the commas I did not include. I learned how to write a proper, non-fragment sentence. Second, I learned how to write argumentative essays. This requires a lot of research and evaluation. One also needs to make sure their source is reliable. Third, I learned how to read. I mean it in the way that I was taught how to analyze text, and make predictions for what it means. My vocabulary also grew, so I have other books too.

What I will remember for the rest of my life from this class, will probably be the class itself. All my classmates are smart and bright students that I will remember a lot of things. Everyone was nice to each other, that I know of. When we would do gallery walks, everyone presented themselves nicely and the comments made were nice too. Now that I put thought into it, we're a smart, nice, and bright class.

The best piece of writing I have done this year would probably have to be the argumentative writing. It seemed easier that I expected it to be. All I had to do is gather a lot of research and write about it. The TKAM thematic essay was interesting too. I did not do as well as the argumentative writing on it, but the experience of writing TKAM was great. To Kill a Mockingbird was probably my favorite book we read the whole year.

The advice I give to future students is simply not to procrastinate. There are several things in Mrs. Larson's class that is due at the end of the week. I found myself procrastinating and leaving everything for Thursday nights. Everything is due on Thursday, it was a rush hour. I was not the only one who procrastinated. It seemed almost everyone waited until Thursday. 7th and 8th graders of upcoming years please do not procrastinate. It is a virus that grows, but may get cured with hard work an determination.

I have a passion for writing. I hope to become a journalist, or something close to that. I know, for sure, there is still a lot of improvement I need. I hope blogger can help me with that. Most students do not ant to continue their blogger, but I do. I hope a good amount of students continue blogger so I can see how they are in life. Therefore, this is NOT my last blog post. It is my last blog post for middle school. When middle school gets mentioned in my future, I think I will automatically think "Mrs. Larson's class." This class was a great first experience of literature. Thank you, Mrs. Larson.

Aphorism Project 5/11/15

"...there is no such thing as 'too late' in life." (p. 190)

Morrie's main message through this aphorism is that no matter how much time has passed in one's own lifetime, they still have the ability to do anything. Morrie is trying to influence people to continue or start a new event.

This aphorism could be related to me. I wish I heard something similar like this during the time I needed motivation to set things right. I said something to someone that hurt their feelings. It is strange how words could have so much power. I waited a good while to apologize, but when I finally did. The relationship between that person and I was never the same. Although, I did feel
much more relieved. This aphorism could also be related to my parents. My parents were not really given the chance to finish school and then have a job. Later in life, they continued their education because they are both passionate about it.

I agree with this aphorism because no matter the regrets or age, there is always time to set things right in life or create memories in life. In other words, there is always enough time for anything. When one makes something out of a certain age, you have experienced that age well. Like Morrie said, "I am every age up to my own." One needs to make every age something as if there was never a "too late in life."

Tuesdays With Morrie - 4/27/15

Pages Read: 130-151
Author: Mitch Albom

Throughout reading, my eyes opened to many things. All of these aphorisms and life lessons made me see the world differently. In my opinion, every Tuesday should be taken of great value. Although, there was a Tuesday that stood out to me the most. The fourth Tuesday "We talk about death" stood out to me the most. Death is something most of us are scared of. We all live in a constant fear of death but we all know it will eventually happen. I am very curious to know what happens after death. I have considered reincarnation. Although, we do not know for sure what happens. Despite my curiosity, I try not to concentrate on that too much. Based on my religion and background influences I just believe in what is expected of me. To me, this avoids confusion.

As mentioned before we all know death is imminent. In this chapter Morrie states, "Everyone know they're going to die, but nobody believes it. If we did, we would do things differently." What I think he means is that we would live life awake. Not in a "sleepwalking" manner. "We really don't experience the world fully, because we're half-asleep, doing things we automatically think are have to do." If we stop this habit we would all take life seriously and enjoy it. Basically, make the best of it. Morrie says by being prepared for death is better "that way you can actually be more involved with your life while living." We all have the ability to make our own lives special. We just have to be involved and interested in it.

I found this Tuesday meaningful because I figured death would be a sensitive topic to discuss since Morrie is dying. Knowing the kind of person Morrie is, this topic is probably the best one to discuss about with him. When Morrie was in his sixties he told a friend, "I'm gonna be the healthiest old man you ever met!" Mitch notices him being optimistic. Morrie replies "Why not? Like I said no one really believes they're going to die." This shows that Morrie does not alienate himself from the world's sleepwalking. Morrie includes himself in it and admits it. That takes courage and shows how wise a balanced he is. Second this shows that, Morrie knows more that anyone that death is going to happen.

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children - 4/20/15

Prompt: Describe a character you would like to meet (which doesn't mean that you think you would like the character, but that you think the character would be interesting.)
Pages Read: 1-39
Author: Ransom Riggs

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children has been quite an intense book from the start. I am still in the beginning but I can sense some tension. Knowing that I am in the beginning of the book and that there are exactly 330 pages left, there is much more coming in my reading adventure. I am not deep into the book to say wether I am enjoying it. The characters do seem to be realistic. They each have such a strong personality that is is easy to predict what part they take in. Of course, there are 330 pages, so this book still has a strong chance of taking a mysterious and menacing twist.

Despite the fact that there are still many characters to be discovered, a character I would like to meet is Grandpa Portman. In the prologue, the main character, Jacob describes his grandpa as wild. When Jacob was a young boy he would visit his grandpa, once in a while. He would love his visits because Grandpa Portman would tell him stories about monsters chasing him. Grandpa Portman has a lot of adventures with fighting and killing monsters, and of course, it sets bewilderment upon young Jacob. As Jacob grows up he starts doubting Grandpa Portman's stories. Jacob confronts to his dad about the "lies" he has been told. His dad says they are part true, and it leaves Jacob in a confusing stage. Later, Jacob learns that the monsters Grandpa Portman was talking about are Nazis. The Holocaust in somehow intertwined with this book. Again, I am in the beginning of the book but my prediction is that the Holocaust will most definitely be involved.

Grandpa Portman seems like the type of character who is that crazy uncle most have. His defining characteristics are adventurous, crazy, and wise. To me, this seems like a well-rounded person. My whole life my dad has taught me to be a well-rounded person which education, athletics, hobbies, and family/friends. Grandpa Portman seems to value a lot of things although his opinions do not get in the way of other's. When Jacob confronted Grandpa Portman's stories saying straight forward, "I do not believe in your stories anymore." Grandpa Portman's reply was "Okay." There is also a mystery side to Grandpa Portman. I cannot exactly put my finger on it but it is quite obvious to the reader he knows something that the rest of the characters do not know. Maybe, just maybe, there are still an existence of monsters.

Life is Beautiful - 4/13/15

Prompt: Based on the Holocaust literature an poetry we have read, what connections can be made between Life is Beautiful and our reading? What events, scenes, or situations are similar or different? What is similar or different about the mood or tone of the pieces? How is life shown as beautiful throughout the film?

There are a good amount of connections that can be made with the film and literature with poetry we have read. One of the major connections I can make involves poetry. When I was reading my classmate's assigned poetry for the Butterfly project, some poems connected life at a ghetto or concentration camp as something else. For example the poem would be a cover up for how life truly is, which is something tragic. In Life is Beautiful there was also a cover story line in it. This cover up is for Joshua. Everything was a game to Joshua which his father invented, something with a more positive then what is actually is. Another connection is between the movie and Night by Elie Wiesel. In Night the father and son bond starts when Elie's family gets separated. Before, Elie mentioned his dad being busy with his work. He would not make time for his children. After, it was just him and his dad working together fighting for their life. Although Joshua has no idea what is happening.

Many of the poems ended with a depressing tone/mood and the book Night ended in a okay tone/mood for me. Life is Beautiful is definitely an opinionated ending. I am focusing more on the end because it is the overall conclusion. In Life is Beautiful humor is added but not the kind of humor that mocks the Holocaust which is appropriate for the film.

In the beginning of Life is Beautiful  life is truly beautiful. Guido has an adventure and gets the girl. They get married and have a son. It is obvious that they had a beautiful life. Despite the fact that they were in the concentration camp life was still beautiful in a way. When Guido would send little messages to Dora to let her know he is alive that shows that their feelings for each other never ends. Guido's goal is also to have Dora and Joshua alive, which he achieved, therefore at the end life stays beautiful. Therefore, beautiful life has its flaws but stays beautiful.

Night - 3/30/15

Pages Read: Finished
Author: Elie Wiesel

Throughout this memoir there has been many changes in Elie physically and mentally. Although, one of the main changes the readers identifies is his strong faith in his religion. In the beginning we are introduced to how religious he is. When Elie is asked why he prays, it is told in the memoir, "Why did I pray? A strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breathe?" This shows that his prayer, which is his religion, is just as of importance as his own life. His belief is something that is included in his life. It is not until later Elie changes his thoughts.

Elie's belief and faith takes a twist when his whole life style changes. When Elie and his dad arrive at the concentration camp they see many horrors before them. They witness various hangings, beatings, and other deaths of Jews. All these negative events happening to them specifically makes Elie question God, along with other's doing so. Some Jews completely lost faith. When other's in the concentration camp was praying to God, Elie thinks to himself, "Why should I bless his name? The eternal, lord of the universe, the all-powerful and terrible was silent..." The reader also notices Elie's disbelieve as he recalls back to what he is thinking, "Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust." This shows that Elie looks back to the moments when his point of view of God changes because of how terrifying these events were, and it is unforgettable.

Another change throughout the memoir is Elie's relationship with his father. In the beginning Elie describes his father as an "unsentimental man." His father "rarely displayed his feelings, not even within his family, and was more involved with the welfare of others than with that of his own kin." Meaning, that his father was just a figure in his life. Later in the story, when Elie and his father were separated from the rest of their family, which are the females, they become closer. They both go through the same struggles together and are very inseparable.

At the end Elie is trying to convince his father that they both must not fall asleep because they have to be aware of their surroundings. "I''l watch over you and you'll watch over me. We won't let each other fall asleep. We'll look after each other." This shows how Elie and his father has come close together until the very end. Although throughout the memoir there are parts that shows Elie Wiesel's loss of humanity.

Night: 3/23/15

Prompt: Describe what was either believable or unbelievable in your reading. Defend your opinion.
Pages Read: 1-47
Author: Elie Wiesel
Translation editor: Marion Wiesel

Throughout my reading some things took a while for them to settle in. The reason for this being is because some things are beyond terrible that I find it hard to believe. Of course, in a way I do believe them it just takes me a while to adjust to them. All this happened in real life. The fact that it actually happened takes it a while to settle in. If this book were to be fictional I would accept it faster because I know its fiction, fake. This book is not fake, it is real. The Holocaust was and still is a real deal because sit was the first major genocide.

In the beginning of the book it is mentioned that babies are used as target practice. Moche the Beadle tells Wiesel everything he saw. Which includes shooting babies. "Infants were tossed in the air and used as targets for the machine guns." Why would someone want to kill babies when they barely had time of life? This was on of the things that seemed strange to me but later on I have considered this event true. Another event is when an inmate comes up to Elie Wiesel and asks him and his father for their age. After a small discussion back and forth the inmate forces them to accept their fake age. "'No.' The man now sounds angry. 'Not fifty. You're forty. Do you hear? Eighteen and forty." The reason they are given a different age is because if they are too young or too old they wi immediately be sent to the gas chambers. This I found shocking because they are not even given the chance to prove themselves.

I find this whole situation hard to believe at first but then it sinks in. All I could really think of is how thankful I am that the Holocaust is over. Even though it does not pertain to me, I know if I were put in a Jew's shoes or any other Holocaust victim's shoes I would die of fear and pain.

Holocaust AoW Impressions

It is interesting to see how there are different topics on the Holocaust. The reason for this being, is because the Holocaust was something that left so many impacts in this World that created a HUGE impact all together. Descendants of Holocaust survivors have developed stressed disorders that that makes them feel unsafe. This shows how tragedies could leave fear upon us for many generations. Then there are new discoveries being made today about the Holocaust. More concentration camps have been discovered. For a long time it was 7 thousand camps, now it is 12 thousand camps. Many of the articles were about survivors. One survivor that caught my interest was a woman (do not know name) but she knows how close she was to death until she was informed about it. She went to a gas chamber thinking it was a shower, then just left because she thought the "showers" did not work. Descendants of Holocaust survivors are just thankful that they were born in this World. Also, how all this needs to be kept in memory.

The discoveries of the camps surprises me because I thought there was nothing more to the Holocaust, but this proves that there may be more. The woman who walked out of the gas chambers alive made me scared for her. If I were her I know I would be very thankful to be alive, although I'm sure she is, everyone as a matter of fact. Learning about the different topics of the Holocaust from my peers gives me more of an inside scoop of how it was during this dark period. I am just glad that all this is over, but not completely. There are definitely still genocides out there, but hopefully they will soon resolve.

Berlin Memorial Activity Reflection

What did you learn?

What I learned from this classroom activity is the whole process of the German's plan to weaken and get rid of Jews. In the beginning, they placed decrees which would get rid of lawyers and other's that would clash their plan to remove Jews. Slowly, Germans placed other laws which eventually left Jews with nothing. Basically, their freedom was taken away.

Why do you think this monument was built?

I think this monument was built as a remembrance. If people learn this and never forget about it then it may never happen again. Though, this would only happen if one is educated well enough on this topic.

What did you notice about the number of laws passed in certain years?

I noticed that the number of laws were less when it came to the olympics. Trying to hide their plot of getting rid of Jews and their anti-Jew things. I also noticed that the number of laws grew very high the year before Hitler came to power. This is because he still had a high role in power at that time.

Which restrictions do you think you would have the most trouble dealing with?

One restriction I would have trouble dealing with is mostly all of the things we reviewed in class. There was one where it prohibits Jews to go to a specific school. I think I would have trouble with that because I would like to be in an environment where we all coexist. I would also have trouble with not being able to go to theaters, concerts, exhibits, and beaches. Those are all things that I enjoy going to and someone telling me not to do something is upsetting. Overall, all these laws are unfair for everyone. It is hard to imagine how Jews were able to live like this. Probably, most could not.

3rd Quarter Reflections

Two of the books I have read this quarter that is my favorite is either Eleanor & Park or The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. I cannot choose between the two because they are both very different yet left a huge impact on me. Eleanor & Park made me aware that there are people who are going through hardships and I should not be mean to them. Therefore, I should just be nice to everyone because I do not know what they have going on in their personal life. The Absolute True Diary Of a Part-Time Indian made me inspired and hopeful in my life goals. Anyone can achieve anything no matter in what position one is in. The theme of these two books is what made them my favorite.

In my 40 book challenge I do not know where I am at because I am not keeping track. I like reading books endlessly for enjoyment. Although, I do keep track of the genre I am reading. I like being exposed to different genres and branch out. I have read a book in almost every genre except for auto-biography or biography. Which is basically non-fiction. I just do not know which book to read. Any recommendations?

What I enjoyed that was new this quarter is the free choice of AoW's. Gallery walks have helped me gain knowledge of different things around the world instead of just one topic in a week. I also got to know my peers in a way because their article of choice shows me the things that interests them. From there, I am able to interact with them on gallery walks.

This quarter I had a journey that made me gain lots of knowledge throughout writing. I have learned how to write argumentative essays along with that is the research. Lots of research needs to be involved. My research has also improved because of the argumentative unit. I am able to find valid information by identifying wether it is bias or not. Word choice, such as adjectives, take a role in bias articles. By knowing this, I am able to make my own conclusion as to which side I am on with argumentative articles.

AoW Impressions - 3/6/15

From what I have gathered form my peers on international news ISIS is still a huge problem. Only this time ISIS is submitting propaganda online through social media. There is a huge amount of teens that are on social media so now ISIS is got a hold of teens on their side. They also are recruiting females to be their wives. This news really stood out to me because I know ISIS will grow stronger this way. I just do not understand that there would be people in our country who would join ISIS. People recruiting to ISIS from our country shows the different kinds of people our World is made out of.

Along with different kinds of people there are different kinds of diseases and bacteria attacking humanity. Some are getting stronger and spread everywhere because of our doing. Almost everything is our doing. Notice I state "our" and not "others" because everyone is involved in something. Parents are rescheduling vaccination dates or either canceling them, thinking it is better for their children. This is false, studies show that children have a higher chance of diseases. There has recently been a measles outbreak in DISNEY PARKS! Just think about that for a minute. Anywhere and anyone could be exposed to diseases. Therefore, parents vaccinate your kids and yourself.

There were other conflicts that my classmates had mentioned but these two stood out the most to me because most had this. There are so many worries in our World and some are debates, such as, "Should marijuana be legalized for less crime rates?" Then there is, "Is the dress blue and black, or white and gold?" Second, war is a never ending thing. President Obama just granted permission for air strikes. Which is allowing war, in a way...

Overall, knowing all these new topics popping up every week makes me more aware and included in our society. I find this kind of strange that I feel included but in a way I do. I just hope to hear extremely good news that gets the World's mind off from the bad for a few days. Something that might cause for celebration. Sad truth is, this might not happen, or at least not in my life time.

The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - 2/23/15

Prompt: Are the characters realistic (do they seem like they could be real people)? Why or Why not?
Author: Sherman Alexie
Pages Read: 1-51

The main character, Junior, was born with a variety of medical problems. He also comes from a poor Indian family in a poor Spokane Indian reservation. Junior is a very smart student based on his teacher's "motivational speech" to cling on to hope because his intelligence will get him to success. After this it was decided that Junior is to leave the rez and go to a good educational all-white school. Junior's best friend, Rowdy, is what one would call angry. No, he IS angry. Angry is him. He beats up anyone and anything. Except for Junior. When Rowdy sees someone hurt Junior he would start throwing his punches. These are the two main characters so far introduced in the book.

The characters do seem realistic. Each one has a personality/characteristic that is realistic. It is not like a fire breathing human character. The fact that Junior had a brain surgery for having too much fluid in his brain somehow makes the story a bit more realistic to me. This event is something that is possible and could happen. There are also people who are very much like Rowdy. Angry and uses violence towards others when he is feeling down. Rowdy's parents drink a lot and his dad gets abusive with him and his mom. Junior also has parents as drunks but they would never touch a hair on him. From what Junior has explained his parents are good drunks who do not want their kids to end up like them.

Overall, knowing that there are families like this in the world makes it realistic. I could connect to their situations, well not myself personally but some people I know have parents who are drunk or who is struggling through poverty. I could connect on the personal level but it is very broad. The main character is 14 years old and so am I. That's it. Just the age... we are both human! Knowing that humans exist also give more of a realistic feel towards the book.

AoW Impressions - 2/20/15

There are many similarities between most of the articles I gathered information by my peers. ISIS is obviously a major conflict for the World. Most articles articles were about ISIS or either connected to ISIS. Even when it is not mentioned. For example, my article which was about the C.I.A buying chemical weapons from Iraq in secret and destroying them. My article never mentioned ISIS but does relate to it. Aside from my article, I was able to gain more specifics on the recent ISIS tragedy. The beheading of 21 Egyptians as a result of an attack from Egypt to ISIS's camps. A lot of terrorist action not just from ISIS but from other terrorist groups I have never heard of, Boko Horam. Then there were articles that were about diseases and the preparations of epidemics for Ebola. One article was about the negative effects with technology. An article I found unique was about language experts claiming that english should be fixed because it is improper and most of the words are not pronounced how they are spelled. The second major conflict is discrimination on many things such as gender, race, or just the features of a person. One of my peer's article's was about gender equality in Turkey. Women are not treated well there and are protesting while the government does nothing but let them get killed. Another article is centered on a 17 year old girl named Molly who was made fun of because of her features but eventually turned out to be a model. Lastly, in Russia a 16 year old homosexual male came out to his father then was sent to his grandmother who sent him to a "witch" to seek help. Eventually, he ended up with doctors who drugged his body and because of overdose he became ill and was kept quarantined. Activists freed him but later was charged of kidnap.

Wow. Our world could be falling apart or it may be improving. It all just depends on an individual's point of view. ISIS is something the whole world should be on a look out for. Anyone can get attacked at any moment and anywhere. I agree that there are many negative effects on technology. Though there are positive effects as well. Which leaves me awkwardly in the middle of wether technology is good or bad. English, the language, I am sure may be proper if used the right way with the right wording. It is all a matter of play on words. The spelling I do agree that most words are not pronounced how they are spelled but I need more knowledge on other languages and spelling to make a conclusion for that. Once again I am awkwardly in the middle. Equality situation in Turkey makes me realize that our country, the United States, is fortunate than other countries because we have more freedom.  I will admit the US is still going through some tough stuff. Overall, this week's AoWs made me do a lot of thinking, and I am grateful for that.

Black Duck - 2/16/15

Prompt: Do you like what you're reading? Why or Why not?

Author: Janet Taylor Lisle
Pages Read: finished

I did like what I read, which is strange because historical fiction is one of my least favorite genres. I always found it hard to read historical fiction because I needed background knowledge. Black Duck is different, it gives you the knowledge you need. I was able to follow along with the plot of the book. The book starts off with a young boy wanting to have his article published on the newspaper. In order for that he needs to article, of course. He decides to write about the history of Rumrunners. He goes to an old man who people claim used to be a Rumrunner. Instead, he gets a different story. Of the time he and his friend found a dead body who was a Rumrunner. When they return to the body it is gone. Which leaves many mysteries behind and takes the readers on a thrill.

The author, Janet Taylor Lisle, creates such eerie suspense that it is amusing to have see myself reading this book. As mentioned before historical fiction is not my favorite genre. I also learned a lot with this book. I learned that there was a time when alcohol and liquor was illegal. There would be people who would try and sneak in liquor from other countries into the United States. Those people are called Rumrunners. They were considered criminals but were very secretive. This book switched my opinion on historical fiction. Sometimes, one needs to push themselves to read as book to the very end. They just have to find the right book. Now, I can read historical fiction, and maybe I will try to look for other books on the genres I consider not my favorite.

Th1rteen R3asons Why - Book Talk

Hello Everyone! The book I chose for this book talk is Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.  The genre of this book is realistic-fiction and mystery. This book takes place around present day. The main character is a high school boy named Clay Jenson. One day he receives a package full of tapes. Those tapes are recordings of a girl named Hannah; who committed suicide. And Clay's crush. Well before the suicide, Hannah recorded herself explaining why she killed herself. She made thirteen tapes, each tape is a story which includes a specific person as to why she committed suicide. Those people are the only one's who will listen to the tape. Well when Clay receives the tapes it is instructed of him, that he must listen to everything. When he is finished, the tapes have to be sent out to the next person that is said in the tapes. And that person must do the same. So it is like a cycle.

Just listening to the tapes was a huge conflict for Clay. There are several stories before he gets mentioned in them. It builds up a suspense for him. Clay feels guilty because he has no idea what he has done to Hannah but just like her. The book is just a big thriller for the reader because we are put in Clay's point of view. That is what I liked about the book, the author did a good job building suspense. The theme was written out very well too. The theme is to be careful of your actions and saying. It could really affect a person and that person may end up... well dead. Overall, I think this is the type of book that everyone should give it a try because it is very creative. I will admit some parts seems exaggerated to me. Like dramatic. But everyone is different so definitely a must read. Bye!

AoW Impressions

I honestly thought this was a good to be presented with different news topics by our peers. It was very interesting how everyone had similarities and differences in the articles. In a way, we got to know what we all care about or interest us in the world. Though I learned a lot, it was not enough. The amount of time was not enough. I was a bit rushed when I presented my article and some people took their time when presenting which was all a scramble. Maybe if it we would have started the class period before it would have been enough to learn more. I did not get to everyone but I did get to most. Overall, I enjoyed this activity it was just the time that got to me.

I learned more about Stuart Scott and his battle with cancer. Which made me admire his way of being a Sports Anchor. Stuart Scott changed the way of sports being announced. ISIS is definitely a major issue to the world as well as global warming which raised the seas in 2014. I also learned about new laws from different counties which are similar to ours in the US. One classmate had an article about all the problems our world is trying to persevere through and turns those problems into something positive. In a way the writer is trying to calm the audience about everything. This was the last presentation I received before it was time for me to present. (I was the third group) Which is a good way to end my knowledge on the world.

The article that that would turn a negative problem to a positive really left me thinking. Not on that article specifically but on all of them. Yes, our world is going through hardships and will always be. Eventually those hardships might disappear and new ones will appear. It is the way it has always been. We all learn from mistakes which is why we have to stay informed about the world.

Zebra Forests - 1/26/15

Prompt: Describe the major conflict. What side are you on? After reading, I wonder...
Author: Rishe Gewirtz
Pages: 94-147

The major conflict in the story is wether to trust Andrew Snow or not to trust him. That is like an over view of all the other conflicts because Rew and Annie always find themselves choosing to trust Andrew Snow or not to. Andrew Snow is an escaped prisoner who is hiding at their house and holding them hostage. Along with this, Andrew Snow is Rew and Annie's father. This adds more confusion into their tangled background story. Rew is a stubborn boy, he is always trying to figure out ways to escape. He mostly just tells Andrew Snow impertinent comments probably hoping he will leave. Annie, on the other hand, seems to make more peace with Andrew Snow. She is very curious about why her mom left her and why Andrew Snow is not dead. The only way she gets answers is my being nice. She loathe herself when she shows kindness because Annie knows Rew would disapprove. Yet there are so many questions to be solved.

I am leaning a bit more on the trusting side for many reasons. The idea of having Annie's and Rew''s existence was Andrew Snow's. He has not harmed Annie or Rew at all either. I think Rew is being over-dramatic with the situation they are in. Andrew Snow has also been cleaning up their kitchen because he "cares" about their hygiene. True, he is an escaped prisoner that is why I am not all the way on the trusting side but just to be cautious.

Rew told Annie to take a letter and mail it in the mailbox. The letter states the distress they are in which is a prisoner keeping them hostage and asks for help. Annie did not mail it and lied to Rew about completing the task. After reading this I wonder if Rue will find out that his sister lied to him. If he does, I think Rew will react badly to the lie which will lead to chaos. He might do something idiotic and fail at it but will cause the two siblings to part. Hopefully Rew does not find the letter it would be dreadful and dangerous.

Zebra Forests - 1/1915

Slight Spoilers!

Prompt: Are the characters realistic? Why or why not?
Pages Read: 1-94
Author: Adina Rishe Gewirtz

Zebra Forests is a novel about 7th grader. Annie lives with her grandma and her little brother, Rew. Their mother left them with their grandma when they were very young. Before she left she says, "They were always his idea, anyway." Meaning that it was their father who wanted to have them. At the end of the first chapter it is revealed to the reader that their father is dead. Now Annie is just very curious to meet her dad and find out more about him. That is on her list; 1. Get Tall   2. Have and adventure  3. Meet my father. How is that possible if he is dead? Though, there are other secrets to be revealed as the book carries the reader.

Based on the character's background about her parents, the characters in the story do seem realistic. Not everyone has a (one would say) perfect family. If the book started off with a perfect life and perfect family then all of a sudden the author turns the switch, then the book would not seem as realistic to me. There needs to be a few flaws with the character's life. They do not have to be huge flaws, but just to take away that fake feel of the book. Second, America is also being held hostage by Iran in this book. The fact that there is a world problem in this book gives the whole story plot a realistic mood because this affects the characters.

There is this forest that Annie and Rew call "Zebra." Hence the title of the book Zebra Forest. The reason they call it Zebra would be because the white oak trees and dark shadows in the forest make it look like a Zebra's pattern. Annie and Rew found a book in their Gran's room, Treasure Island. The first seven chapters were ripped away from the book. Annie and Rew gave the story a new beginning. They came up with multitudes of beginnings. Based on these two things it is obvious they have a creative mind. Especially Rew. He loves coming up with cheesy jokes and riddles. For their age their behavior matches perfectly. It is their imagination that stands out the most. Overall, yes, I do think the characters in this book are realistic because of their behavior with imagination and their lives. Imagination is something so powerful that one should always carry.

Eleanor & Park - 1/12/15 Additional blog

Author: Rainbow Rowell
Pages Read: FINISHED

I finished this book less than a week. I could not put it down, there were moments when I would laugh and sometimes I wanted to throw the book at the wall because of Eleanor. (I would never book abuse!) Eleanor is the kind of girl who is too insecure about herself. I understand why she would be insecure, because of her personal life but her insecurities effect people around her. Like Park is truly in love with her and when he says something like, "I was nervous because your different." Eleanor would translate that to, "By different you mean ugly, fat, weird and not like other girls." This would make Park lose confidence with her. It would be things like this that Eleanor would say or do.

I do not want to spoil anything for blogger readers, but this book left flat on the ground. I understand that most of the time, in a book, it is not about the ending but about the story. I remember reading a book that I hated the ending so I deleted the book from my kindle and I wanted to do many other things so I could forget about it. Now I regret it. The ending to this book is mostly based on one's opinion. Some thought it was good others thought the opposite. Then there are those who just are left deep in thought and are not able to start a new book. It is a book hangover! Wish others good luck to those who plan on reading this book.

TKAM Novel to Film - 1/12/15

Prompt: What do you think is the most important difference between the written and the film version? Provide evidence with specific details.

What I thought was the most important difference in the film versus the book was the fact that Calpurnia did not come out as much. She is very important part of the book, her character helps the reader view Scout's persona. For example, in the book when Scout is being rejected by Dill and Jem, Scout spends more time with Cal and shows how Scout is more of a tomboy. Cal gives that woman influence in the novel. Some would say it was aunt Alexandra, after all she moved in with them for that reason, though Cal is always at the house and seems kinder than Aunt Alexandra. Overall, Cal helps Scout's character.

Another major difference was when Atticus was making his closing remarks, he loosens up his clothing a bit to show confidence and that there is nothing to hide from the court. Even though this is very specific and may not seem as important, to me it does. In the novel when he does so, he still remains professional yet takes a stand. I could the film being able to demonstrate this, thought they did not include it. It is a small gesture that signifies something big. Since the trial Atticus is dealing with is very delicate yet tough to win because it includes racial injustices, Atticus has to not only speak to defend Tom he also has to find actions to win the trial. By doing so he did, which showed confidence and every little bit of his role counts.

Of course, the book is always better than the movie. The reason for this would be because we all have imagination that has no limit. Therefore we can imagine things how ever we want and what we imagine might be perfect for us, that is why most prefer the book. Many, who are book lovers, say that they swallow up the words wTo Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
hen really for me it feels that the words swallow us up. Which at many times could be good or bad. Overall, it is quite an adventure, just how I had with

My First Adventure - Hawaii

Prompt: When was the last time you did something for the first time?

I do not really remember anything amazing I have done for the first time. Well at least not recently. Then I remembered my Hawaii trip last October. That was my first time traveling across the ocean to get to a different part of the world. Though, I wasn't the one flying the plane, so for me that doesn't count. Then I thought what I did in Hawaii... I went surfing (epic fail), hiking, almost got stung by an eel, went scuba diving and I also tried hawaiian food. We also did other things but those stood out the most because it is quite an thrill.

The whole purpose for going to Hawaii was for a wedding. Then my dad and step-mom decided to take advantage and split the days to visit a friend who lives on a different island in Hawaii. Which takes us to O'ahu. There we went scuba diving which was my first time doing that. I was scared at first because but once I saw what was inside the ocean it was beautiful! There were fish with such vibrant colors and corals that felt fuzzy. We also went shopping to explore what kind of stores they have and other kinds of food restaurants. Of course, they had McDonald's. The people seem to be "chill" and have a lot of patience. They were nice people. Maybe a bit too nice at times... We rented a car so when we drove on the express way they had like 6 lanes for cars. Which surprised me considering it is such a small island. We visited only one beach because of the short time we had there. The beach was stunning. There were fish everywhere though they didn't bother us. My dad decided to rent a paddle board. That is when we saw an eel.

The bride and groom
I was on the paddle board my little sister next to me along with my step-mom and her mom. My dad, who knows where he was at the moment but it was just us. Then my little sister asked what was that black fish moving in the water. My step-mom looks at it and thinks it a rock so she touches it with her foot. Then it started to slither around an we realized what is was. She screamed and grabbed my little sister putting her on the paddle board with me which caused me to fall down into the water. I tried hard to get back up then I felt the eel going around me. My step-grandma helps me back up and we swim out of the water. Yea, that just happened.

Now lets skip to Maui. That was where the wedding took place. It was such a beautiful wedding by the beach and there wasn't a lot of people therefore is was calm. The wedding was the first event we did on that island. On my way to to wedding we passed by some beautiful scenery of a beach with palm trees. Everything was surreal! Right after the wedding we got to throw flower pedals which smelled really good. What I also liked about the wedding was that we has tonight up some sparklers and create two lines forming a passage for the bride and groom to walk under.  The bride, I have known her since I was 3 years old. She was always the type of person to wear loose clothing and no makeup. Well, she is naturally pretty but seeing her in her wedding dress made me very happy for her. Her husband I have also known him since I was three he is always the type of man to be kind and warm-hearted. They make perfect match. My family and I were the only hispanics there. When we asked the DJ to play some spanish music everyone was confused at first but then started dancing which was a bit entertaining to watch. Overall, the wedding was amazing!

My dad and sister
There were days when we spent the whole day going to different beaches. After the eel incident my step-mom was a bit unsure go the beaches but still went in. The only reason she went in was because of something she always wanted to do and it is on her bucket list for her family to do this activity along with her and this activity is surfing. We had an instructor to tell us how to stand up on the board. First we practiced on the sand. Then we practiced paddling our selves to a wave. We also had to learn to identify the perfect surfing wave. Then it was time. First went my dad who couldn't even stand up without falling. Then my step-mom who was able to stand up but not for long. My step-grandma was just taking care of my little sister while watching us fail until it was my turn. It was very hard though I think it would have been harder if I didn't know how to ride a skateboard. I think I lasted a goo 5 seconds. Which was nothing compared to other surfers. I got hit on the head with my surf board. Which was very painful. Though it was a good experience.

Alien fruit
On our way up (supposedly)
We had a whole day just eating food. I tried coconut for the first time it was good. There for is like a mixture of a lot of things, includes a lot of fruit. We also tried this red hairy fruit which was like a giant grape on the inside and it was good. Despite the fact it looks like something an alien might eat it was delicious. I saved my last adventure for the best. It was when we went hiking up a mountain. It was very dangerous. At the very top people would pass out because it was too much exercise. We had to go through a spiral staircase a steep staircase and climb some rocks. It was a bad idea to take my sister's stroller, let alone my sister. That was my thought at first but she did a great job. I was just the one to carry her stroller halfway there. It was nothing compared to the walk I did in Mexico a couple years ago but this was more dangerous I will admit I was scared. Once we got on the top the view was amazing! I also noticed there was an emergency helicopter landing. That was like foreshadow. When we made it at the top there was this couple taking pictures then I see the boyfriend sit down but misses his seat on a rock. He falls back and almost hits his head on the rail. I got scared and my first reaction was to yell for my step-mom because she is a doctor and knows how to handle these situations. Chaos of a huge crowd started surrounding the man, my step-mom pushes pass them and helps him out. She gives him water and kept his legs elevated up for blood circulation. His girlfriend (or so I thought) said he was perfectly healthy but was freaking out. This took about 2 hours for my stepmom to take care of him before the medics came in the helicopter. My dad, sister, and grandma were just waiting on the stair the whole time. When my stepmom finally came she told us everything that was going on. I will not share the man's problem because it is personal. After the
commotion we climbed back down and the
When we made it on top

adventure was over for the day.

The next day we see the couple coming out of a limousine in front of our hotel. The lady was in a wedding dress and the man was in a suit. They were getting married, no wonder the man passed out! (Just kidding.) I just find this ironic. Well as it turns out my whole Hawaii trip was a first to many things. This blog is the longest blog I have eve written what a way to start off the first blog of 2015! If anyone made it this far to read, Thank you!

New Year, New Goal

My academic goal for this New Year is to not procrastinate on assignments anymore. I have found procrastination a huge issue this school year, struggling to keep my grades up because I wait until the last minute. There was a time when I did not procrastinate, that time I remember being stress free. Therefore, I am positive my procrastination will be gone.

My personal goal is to be more connected with my family and friends. Recently, I saw many family members and realized that we are no longer close. I miss my cousins and other family members. We all used to be close, and we should be because we all live in the same area. In the future when I will try to plan some days when my cousins and I could spend time together.

Overall, I hope to succeed in many things this year. 2015 will be busy year for me, I have graduation, my confirmation, and quince. I would like all these events to turn out okay.  I also wish and hope all the people around me to have a good 2015 by living and being happy. I ask 2015 to please be good to all of us.

Roll of Thunder Hear Hear My Cry - Winter Break

Prompt: Does the title fit the story? Why or why not?
Author:
Pages Read: FINISHED

This book seems to relate the past perfectly. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry involves bravery and truth about our past which is racism. Racism is still going on today in society but not as much as in the past. Many had to live in fear from people who are no different than others. In the end of the book, which is where the climax mostly is at, there is a storm which set the fields on fire. That is when everyone in the book has to work together to put the fire out. Just before there was a fire a riot against the colored was going on. Their intentions were to hang a young boy who is being blamed of murder. When the storm and thunder strikes it makes matters worst because more get injured. In a way it helps all of them work together and forget their purpose in that moment.

This shows me that greater tragedies could make certain situations better. Though, in that moment one might be terrified just how the main character is terrified. "Hear My Cry" when one is terrified they might show it by crying many characters in the book shows fear in different ways. One of the characters, TJ, when he would get angry or embarrassed he would "play off" the situation and act worst. That is his personality. Colored people were not treated fairly in this book, because that is how it was in the past. Many are just yelling for help and doing whatever they can to support themselves and their family. I also think the title is used metaphorically, the thunder might not just be the storm at the end of the book t could also be about the situations the main characters have been facing throughout her book.

Overall, my thoughts toward this book is mostly positive. The ending says truth which was my favorite part. I recommend this book to everyone. This is to my type of book but I really did enjoy it. It was a great experience to read it and very interesting. I will admit it is not my top favorite out of five stars I give it three. Such a great book to learn about the past. If you read this book, hope you enjoy it! :)
